a hut for backpackers, a self-catering lodge for groups

El Refugi is our hostal for hikers and groups, your refuge in the mountains. A building designed and built to comfortably shelter backpackers after a hard day's walk and to accommodate groups who come to spend a weekend together. It's a place to share, to talk about your adventures on the GR with other hikers or to cook a great meal with your friends while your kids play on the loft above. The Refugi offers outdoor lovers all the basic necessities: a well heated space, comfortable beds, a fully equipped kitchen, functional showers, clean bathrooms, and a host of trails to explore just outside its doors.

The Refugi is a new structure, built to respect the traditional style of the area. It’s located on the Transpyrenees hiking trail (GR-10), next to the Orri de Planès guesthouse. It can sleep up to 16 people.

The building has two floors. On the lower level, there is an entry hall (with space to store boots, jackets and bags), 2 toilets and 2 showers. An indoor stair leads to the upper level, divided into two spaces: the dining room / kitchen and the dormitory, each with its own loft space.

The dining room / kitchen has everything needed to prepare full meals. On the loft just above, there is a living area with two sofas and a small colleciton of books, magazines and games.

The dormitory is an original space. It sleeps 12 people on folding bunk beds on the main level and 4 people on individual beds on a loft above.

From June through September, the Refugi operates as a gîte d’étape: occupants rent individual beds and share the structure.

During the rest of the year, it operates as a self catering group accomodation. The minimum reservation is 2 nights and the rental fee includes all utilities.

In Summer, Refugi guests enjoy the use of an outdoor terrace with two picnic tables and two washing sinks. They can swim in the Orri’s pool and order drinks at the Orri’s outdoor terrace. Year round, they can reserve dinners and/or breakfasts in the guesthouse’s dining room.

Three long-distance hiking trails pass in front of the Refugi: the GR-10 or Trans-Pyrenean trail, the GR-36 that crosses France from north to south, and a little-known variant of the Camino de Santiago that connects Perpignan with the Seu d?Urgell.

A Place to Dream

We stayed in the Refugi for two nights whilst completing sections of the GR10 - Pyrenees Way. Marta and Arif run a fantastic Gite, clean, comfortable, a pool, well thought out, a pleasure to rest tired legs after a long days walk. Everyone sits down at meal times to experience conversation, excellent local food, wine - an authentic French meal time - far beyond the expectation of the usual Gite experience. (...) the Refugi is a spacious hostel building with great kitchen, washing and sleeping facilities - the bed was very comfortable and welcoming after long days and good food!

Perhaps the highlight of the place is the owners commitment to establishing a high quality, highly sustainable property which gives travellers a real taste of the Pyrenees - Highly recommended for families, walking groups, or anyone who wants to relax and enjoy the Pyrenees.
